To assist artists in preparing their entry for the 2022 Mandorla Art Award, a webinar was presented with two speakers:

Understanding metaphor and symbolism with Mandorla Chairperson Angela McCarthy. Symbol and metaphor are words that are sometimes used interchangeably. They are not the same, so this short unravelling of their meaning will open new trails to explore. Angela is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame Australia. Following a long teaching career she is now dedicated to her research students in art and theology, and numerous writing projects. 

Tips for writing your artists statement and bio with author Elaine Fraser. A full time writer since 2005, Elaine has published eight books, blogs for several sites, and is an international speaker, including TEDx in San Francisco. Mentoring and assisting new writers is a big part of her life, with clients around the world.

“I mentioned that I use readability statistics in Word to help make my writing easier for people to read. I’ve included a link to an article explaining it all. The article says to limit sentence length to 24 words, but I try to get it under 20 unless it’s absolutely necessary. 

This is how I use it:

1. Go into Word: Preferences: Spelling and Grammar and make sure Show Readability Statistics is ticked.

2. In your document, check spelling and grammar. When Word has finished checking spelling and grammar, this will come up:

You can also use Grammarly and it will give you Readability Statistics as well.”
