This painting is a bold flat statement about the destruction of war and the hope of peace. The old life of wooden fences and gardens has been destroyed. It was the life of the heart. In its place are the battlements of conflict and the protests of graffiti. Throughout the chaos Mary stands serene if sorrowful, a beacon of love, understanding and reconciliation. Icon painting is a conservative practice without a tradition of perspective. The writing enhances and reinforces the visual image.

Nine years ago now Margaret began ‘Giv Life’, a soup kitchen. When I began joining her to volunteer, I noticed how she remembered so many details about each persons past, and almost every name that would attend, I admired this genuine love. Margaret is passing on the freedom and love that she has found in Christ to so many different people in crisis, without pushing her beliefs but through the patience and loving disposition of understanding theirs. She said some nights they’ve had 1 person come along, some nights 20 but it never mattered, as long as they fulfilled their mission to make just one person feel loved. Not coming across as superficial in faith or sanctimonious to her deeds, God has centred her heart in the right place to help and be compelling of Gods love for these people.

The L game was invented in 1967 by Edward de Bono. The game's objective is to block your opponent's L-shaped piece from moving by strategically occupying space. This strategy mirrors tactics used in both historical and current wars. In this painted version four end games are presented together. This setup ensures that there is always space for an L piece to move, symbolizing a world without borders. I propose this as a solution to our problems, advocating for a world in which we work together as one, a world where there is acceptance and LOVE in our hearts for all.

Looking in through the gothic archway we are a silent witness to love. A saintly motherly figure radiating love glows whilst offering her heart in an unconditional self-sacrificing gesture. Agape love is giving one’s all with no expectation of return. The lotus a symbol of the pure human soul, of agape love, its presence at the highest point is totemic. The lotus is a remarkable flower that blossoms in perfect form, yet its roots lay in a muddy slimy environment –an imperfect world. The bubbles floating in the background are a metaphor for the transient nature of life. It’s inability to sustain its own weight, bursting-highlights the fragility of life and the importance of giving this agape love. This kind of love makes us safe, secure, happy and allows us to blossom like the lonely lotus

This work uses worn colourful scraps of lino flooring to speak to Mother-love. It is a map, referencing the devotion and care given by mothers daily, doing what they do with unconditional love. The work shows the countless marks of care history, paint drips of rooms renewed, scuff marks and places worn down by busy feet. It also tells of personal, heartfelt memories; those of patience, tolerance, the security of warm beds, wholesome food, and the rooms made ‘special’ for celebration and family time. Further, the lines of stitching are threads of conversation over a life time of enduring commitment, inspiration, guidance and everlasting love. They express support through the patching of worn and torn and of ‘making do’: The provision of what is necessary given with unconditional love.

In this diptych, I explore the theme of "Refocus" through two interconnected paintings. The first canvas, adorned with abstract lights, invites observers to contemplate the cosmic unknown, symbolizing moments of divine illumination amid life's uncertainties. It emphasizes the need to refocus on the spiritual journey. Contrastingly, the second canvas portrays imposing rocks, symbolizing tangible challenges. The choice of twelve rocks subtly references biblical completeness, urging viewers to reflect on the completeness found in love. The diptych encourages a refocus on love, compassion, and spiritual introspection, aligning with the biblical passage. It emphasises that, amidst uncertainties, love remains the guiding light in all aspects of life.

Growing up my father was a street preacher. He had a great bit where he would put a bible under a white blanket and yell "IT'S ALIVE" until a crowd gathered, then announcing that the word of God was indeed alive. He's since changed religions and several countries but one thing that remained was my belief that a street preacher is always good for some banter. The photo in this artwork is of a preacher I speak to on occasion walking to my studio in Fremantle. It's always enlivening being able to jump straight to the big existential questions of life in a conversation with a stranger. Sometimes these chats linger with me and visit the studio to end up in a painting. The son of a preacher selling words for a living. How's that for full circle?

With these words (a secular prayer) is a social-practice arts project that engages directly with the theme, REFOCUS. In response to a call-out on social media, over sixty strangers volunteered 1-2 hours to handwrite the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I selected this secular text because it resonates across faith, nationality, politics, history, age, gender and language. The participants came together from the Netherlands, France, England, Scotland, North America and Australia in a shared moment of care, compassion and responsibility. The texts are written in English, Korean, Chinese and French. Each is a personal, autographic drawing, a private moment, but it is also a communal activity allowing participants to refocus on love, compassion, the meaning of community and hope.

On this day I knew what I must paint. Had known it since I saw the image galloping toward and into me from the pulpit as the sweet voices sang the words in church. But I was too tired to paint. Every time I made the attempt the days previous I fell asleep on the nearest surface. On this day His quiet voice spoke, "Just put your brush to the canvas and the enemy will fall away." I was obedient. My arm felt like lead, but the very moment my brush touched the canvas the veil of fatigue and defeat evaporated. I wept throughout. We charged into battle. Wearing His armour made of His Love and Words. Because when we focus on God we walk in Love, we ARE Love. He need be our only focus. We must find every way to express it, to Cloak this earth with His Love and Grace. In His name. Amen.

It was called Port Beach and was remarkable to me in that it was the site where all the shipping containers were sat after arrival or before setting off to some distant land. 'Flooded' is inspired by the iconography of ancient Greek and Roman mythology, its folklore, and its religious paintings, recasting the contemporary woman as a powerful goddess of nature and a portrayal of femininity that we should celebrate, embrace and worship. A God-like enigmatic female figure is submerged within a dramatic watery cloudscape, blurring the lines between heaven and earth. Portraying the existential dualities of light and dark, she transverses through a portal into an unknown time of fear and discomfort, longing for a deeper connection. The unsettling maelstrom in which this figure tumbles and swirls into the vortex is her refuge, perhaps a pathway to enlightenment.
