The attacks of Hamas on Israel, and Israel’s response have raised some of the most moral challenges of the current day. This painting depicts a nocturne of a section of the Gaza strip, involving rubble, makeshift burials, grief, and a man riding a donkey, illuminated by a sky lit artificially by warfare. I regularly work within a painterly tradition of romanticism, investing work with figures which have a fragility to them, including their faith, and using paint to try to wrench out some emotional truths and impact on a viewer.
