Andrew Daly – Jonah and the Whale
As we know, the first commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength—and to love our neighbour as yourself. This is what we need to focus on. In the Old Testament, we read of the chosen people and how they often lose their focus; they turn to worshipping idols, they go their own way, and they inevitably end up in deep trouble. It’s a recurring theme in the Old Testament, and we see it in our own recent history.
It’s a theme we also see in the story of Jonah. God commands him to go to Nineveh, but he ignores that command and goes his own way. Inevitably, a storm comes, and he is swallowed by both a beast and the ocean depths. And yet the story has a happy ending because, in his despair, Jonah refocuses on God; he repents and is delivered safely onto dry land.
