Acts of God. Acts of Us. – Katie Gordon

Before man existed, God created a garden and told us in Genesis that it was ‘very good’. Walking humbly can be seen as an invitation to tread lightly in this world formed for justice, mercy and kindness.
Instead, we pillage and plunder until earth convulses and brings us proximity to her pain. We hide murdered, bloodied bodies in depths created to sustain life. Land burns in fury, purging itself of our violence, inverting bloodstained soil into fire-tinged skies.
The ‘Mountains of the Mist’ in my home country Zimbabwe are a site of jarring contrast: their Edenic beauty (acts of God) also the location of souls slain in apocalyptic brutality for preaching His mercy and grace (acts of us).
