At The Tomb – Joanna Gentilli
In this painting Mary goes to the tomb to mourn Jesus. She is afraid and the rush light that she carries casts flickering shadows on the huge primordial stones. Slabs of granite, shreds of linen and dark doorways are dominated by the image of a blood red nail. It is an ancient, powerful and menacing place but at its centre there is light. The angel is here and he tells Mary “Do not be afraid, for I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He is Risen. These words mark a profound change for the whole world. As in the earlier Transfiguration, Jesus has changed to a different form, not of nature but of glory.
