Good Rubbish – Ed and Liliana Stafford

6 February, 2020

The kneeling figure is made from random pine offcuts destined for landfill. It has no material worth and has been deemed disposable by society, but remains beautiful and complex.
The knitted blanket is made of wire. Blankets should give warmth and comfort, but this blanket gives neither and cannot protect the figure in the face of adversity. The wire is full of holes to fall through, the pins are symbolic of circumstantial barriers.
The blanket, however, offers colour and kindness to the figure. Both are made more. The blanket is a symbol of hope, showing the impact even the smallest of kindnesses can have. The figure looks to the future; more colour, better protection.
