Kintsugi – Joanne Hayward

Using wax as a fundamental medium, I work to suggest the notion of healing, with reference to Michah 6:8. The property of wax as a non- rigid material, works here to resonate the world of ancient mapped territories, whilst also suggesting the disintegration of present boundaries. The Hebrew characters within this image are purposely overlaid and inverted to suggest sites of non-alignment, and a living together with integrity. The title “Kintsugi” refers to a Japanese tradition of repairing broken pottery by mending areas together with a mix of gold, silver and platinum. In this work the borders of Israel are painted in healing gold lines.
