Study in Gold III – Tania Price

6 February, 2020

Based on a digital news photograph of a group of refugees walking along the shore of a Greek island, having been provided with metallic-gold thermal blankets after their perilous sea journey, my work asks its audience to engage with the circumstances of these people. The role of a media image is to inform us of events and issues in our world – rarely, though, do we stop to think about our relationship with, or obligation to, the individuals at the centre of the story. I hope that through the materiality and physiciality of paint on canvas, both artist and viewer might pause to contemplate what it is we are looking at and where we fit in the narrative of global events.
