Your Presence Here – Eveline Ruys

Empathy is a key to fulfilling Micah’s words. It opens us to others so we can understand what is just, kind and humble. In this painting the dissolving self, merging with other bodies represents the embodiment of empathy as no longer an abstract idea.
I used the pelican symbol for Christ because what Micah says amounts to being like Christ. Charity and self-sacrifice are woven into the pelican symbol, while reeds are for the Passion, the colour green for hope and creation and the colour yellow for divine radiance and revelation.
I used glazes and dilution to create a translucent quality and give a sense of the space between the material and spiritual worlds, which we inhabit in empathy.
