Artist Statement

This work was inspired by the work of Dr Peter Santangelo, the Australian mental health nurse, theorist and advocate. He articulated the importance of being truly ‘present’ with people – taking positive steps to be in the here-and-now, side-by-side with them, on their territory physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. Just Act Garb recognises those people who are clothed in altruism, compassion and trustworthiness. The work is created with silk and silk chiffon, eco-printed with rust water, onion skins, eucalyptus leaves and bark, together with kanoko shibori using gum nuts and suspended on found copper wire.

Description

Athena Harris Ingall works out of her studio at Lake Macquarie in New South Wales. At age seven, her grandfather showed her the beautiful prints achieved by leaving a pair of discarded leather riding gaiters and a canvas water bag covered with eucalyptus leaves under old steel and water pipes. She uses eco-printing and botanical dyeing techniques to mark natural and often vintage or recycled fibres, working mainly with rust water, eucalyptus leaves, bark, gum nuts and fruits, and often incorporates shibori techniques into her work. Her aesthetic is informed by her love of the environment and the beauty and meaning found in compositions made from ordinary, simple things.
