The everything you don’t see

Oil on linen, 51 x 80cm

Artist Statement

“The everything you don’t see is about introspection and what you don’t see – the void around the image. The intense gaze draws us into a moment of intimacy that invites us to linger and ponder. The moment before emerging from the unseen and the silence. There is change even in silence.”

Be still
Listen to the stones of the wall.
Be silent, they try
To speak your

To the living walls.
Who are you?
Are you? Whose
Silence are you?

About the artist

Rachel Coad’s figurative painting practice spans 20 years. She was awarded the $50,000 Black Swan Prize for portraiture in 2016. She has exhibited in both Australia and the UK, and was shortlisted for the BankWest Painting Prize (winner of the People’s Choice), the Kilgour Art Prize 2015 and 2018 and the Doug Moran Prize in 2019. Figuration offers a vehicle for Coad to delve into existentialism, and the engagement of viewer to subject is key to her work.
