Metamorphosis Of The Old Trading Post At New Norcia

Perched just south of the Museum and Art Gallery, The Old Trading Post (OTP) in New Norcia— once known as Lanigan’s Store— has undergone an extraordinary transformation in the last few months. After lying dormant for nearly 30 years, this humble building has blossomed into a stunning new home for the Mandorla Art Award collection.
What began as a weathered relic from the town’s past is now a vibrant, purpose-built gallery, thanks to the vision, planning, and hard work of a dedicated team, New Norcia staff and a host of tradies— from roofers and plasterers to painters and landscapers, the OTP has been brought back to life, inside and out.
The meticulous restoration included everything from a new roof and verandah to refreshed balustrading, internal plasterwork, and gallery-quality lighting. Long-time collaborator Steve Mossman handled the intricate painting work, bringing warmth and beauty to every surface.
By March 2025, the renovation was complete, and the process of moving and curating over 50 pieces of Mandorla Art into the new space began. Under the creative eye of Abbot John, the artworks were thoughtfully placed across five distinct gallery rooms— each with its own character and purpose, including a dedicated space for the artist-in-residence.
Now, The Old Trading Post – Home of Mandorlal Art Award stands not only as a beautifully restored heritage building but as a beacon of contemporary religious art. It houses all 23 past winners of the Mandorla Art Award and offers a powerful and permanent space to celebrate spirituality through creativity.
Mandorla would like to extend our deepest thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in this transformation. The OTP is no longer just a building, it’s a symbol of vision, community, and artistic legacy.
In October 2025 we will celebrate the official opening of this building and 40 years of faith and art with Mandorla Art Award.
